Italian marble statue
South Bend, IN (AHN) - Notre Dame will honor former coach Lou Holtz, the engineer behind the 1988 championship team, at the Irish's home game against Michigan Saturday.
The university will unveil a statue in Holtz's honor, with two players beside him reminiscent of the scene 20 years ago, when the Irish went unbeaten on the way to defeating no. 3 West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl.
Holtz said he is humbled by the tribute, saying that the championship victory was a collective effort from all players, the Notre Dame administration and the athletic directors.
The coach amassed a 100-30-2 record in 11 coaching seasons with the Irish.
He is expected to share inspiring words to the Irish in their game against the Wolverines
