EDMOND -- With the statue of Tom McCall unveiled and speeches over, the former governor's longtime friend Norma Paulus invited the hundreds of students outside Tom McCall Elementary to have their picture taken with the bronze statue.
Suddenly, a mass of ecstatic youths swarmed the figure of McCall emerging from the North Umpqua River, clutching a steelhead. The kids ran their fingers along the metal fish, laughing as they jostled beneath McCall's downward gaze.

The scene recalled an iconic photo from four decades past of the towering McCall serving ice cream to students at a Keizer elementary school.

Close to 100 local World War II veterans will board a plane Wednesday to see the newly erected World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. VFW Post 4893 of Franklin held a send-off for them Tuesday afternoon.
There is a national volunteer program dedicating to honoring the veterans by providing all-expense paid trips to D.C. to visit the memorial.
More than $60,000 was raised through private and business donations to play for the Midstate veterans' trip
