LAKEMORE: The Resting Doughboy is back home.
The unusual World War I sculpture, stolen two weeks ago from the center of town, was found by a fisherman Tuesday morning submerged in the Mogadore Reservoir in Portage County.
The 3-foot-high statue is damaged. The doughboy's head has been smashed in, leaving a gaping hole. And his left hand and most of his rifle are missing, but at least it's been found, police and community leaders said.
''We got him back,'' Police Chief Kenneth Ray said. ''Now we've got to go after the people who took him.''
The zinc statue the centerpiece of Memorial Day parades and Veterans Day activities in the community had stood in the village for about 70 years

The sculpture was commissioned to honor McCall's devotion to preserving Oregon's natural environment.
'My job was to bring to life Tom McCall's spirit in bronze, to keep his message alive,' Caswell says, adding he took time 'to gain a personal understanding of the former governor to assure his work captures the courage and passion the governor had for Oregon and its environment.
'My hope is that the sculpture inspires both those people who knew him and those that did not.'
The statue is taking a tour this week before it's dedicated in a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, in Salem. From the Park Bronze foundry in Enterprise, it stopped in Pendleton on Monday and Redmond on Tuesday.
'Because Tom loved being out mingling with people, we thought it would be fitting to have his sculpture stop at several cities to touch base at public gatherings across the state,' says Norma Paulus, chair of the Tom McCall Memorial Committee and former Oregon secretary of state.
United States District Judge James Redden, Salem Mayor Janet Taylor and Paulus will join Tad McCall, son of Governor McCall, in the Friday presentation of the statue to the people of Oregon.
The $200,000 Tom McCall Memorial was made possible through 126 individual donations, along with support of eight foundations and Oregon Building Trade Unions
